Modernist Art
Modern art represents an evolving set of ideas among a number of painters, sculptors, writers, and performers who - both individually and collectively - sought new approaches to art making. Although modern art began, in retrospect, around 1850 with the arrival of Realism, approaches and styles of art were defined and redefined throughout the twentieth century. Practitioners of each new style were determined to develop a visual language that was both original and representative of the times.
This type of artwork is something that cannot necessarily be related to any specific artist or even art movement. I relate this piece to modernism because it is my latest work and shows how I have improved as an artist in my day of age. It show how instead of looking at work from past movements I am looking to the present and future of art and creating my own work in the movement relevant to today, which I see as being modern art.

Planning
Instead of creating the lion piece first, I had another projected started that I was going to use. It was a alchemist, Gothic clock. I wanted to do the clock at first because I wanted a piece that would look and feel like a project that I would have to do in college. It would cover a art movement, relate to industrial design my looking at all parts, such as how they worked mechanically and artistically. I eventually dropped the project because it was becoming very difficult with have to correctly and accurately measure lengths and be able to show how it would work properly. It was also a very significant amount of research I put into learning alchemy and number symbolism.
I first needed to know how to illustrate a lion head and face. It is something that I had never down before. To perfect the technique, I practiced drawing lions in a simple way to portray the facial structure and get a sense of what I will have to work with. I looked at images of lions to use as a reference.
Process
Once I felt confident in my ability to illustrate a lion, I created a light structure of the face and mane. I then drew on the glasses because they would be in the foreground of the lion's face. From there I added detail to the face and hair/mane using shadowing techniques and shading. I stuck to a very distinct shadowing style so that it's face would pop and become more present and make the image still look 2-Dimensional. As I moved away from the face I used much more shading to account for the transition to the lion's mane.
Meaning
The combination of a human and an animal is world wide not exceptional. It is observed in Middle America, Latin-America, Mesopotamia, Egypt and India. It cannot be a coincidence that this was the case in different cultures. When Homo-sapiens left Africa between 65,000 and 80,000 years ago, he took with him a lot of customs and a common religion, the ancestor cult. This belief, that exists until today, implied that living beings had a soul: animism. People believed they had the same soul that could reincarnate from human, to animal, but also in the opposite direction. My piece depicted this idea, but combining the two into one form. It represents great power humans may have like self-control and balance of life which leads to own personal power, and more specifically, in myself.
Even though I didn't do the clock piece, from the extensive research I conducted, I found that the lion as an alchemy symbol, takes on many representations. In alchemical texts, a red colored lion indicates sulphur which represents the multiplicity of human nature and the eternal aspiration to reach enlightenment.

Connecting to the ACT
1) Based off of the inspiration I researched that influenced me to create my moderist drawing piece made me practice and experiment different techniques to use to make the piece in order to get a general concept of what I had to work with for my piece, such as drawing out facial structural and hair on the lion.
2) I took a very open-concept and open to different kinda of structure and flow of the mane when working on this project. I did this so that the piece wouldn't look as formal but instead something that would look natural and wild. I found that when implementing Modernist-style art with my piece, I could use my inspiration as a way to better represent the meaning and style.
3) I discovered the value that moderist and appreciation for its stype on the present day had impacted people. It is in a sense a movement where people can make whatever they feel.
4) The conception of observation and using elements that I was confortable in and knew how to do, found to be very relevant for inspiration and drive for me. The value of how my piece was presented was immensely important to reach to every aspect.
5) Concluding from my research, I discovered a deeper understanding of what my I used for my inspiration and was better able to produce a more meaningful and understandable art piece.
