Scenic

Exhibition Text
Based off of Frank Lloyd Wright and his naturalistic outlook, I created a Visionary Multi-Layered Urban Landscape to show the ideas of Wright and additions of my own concepts. Using wood and construction foam, I create a scenic landscape using the element of light to highlight and sharpen the perspectives of it.
The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.
- Frank LLoyd Wright
CONCEPTUALIZING
From the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, I was introduced a project in Explorations in Constructing Visionary Multi-Layered Urban Landscapes. The idea is to create a landscape, implementing different aspects of form on a 12" x 12" wood plate.
Frank lloyd wright and his naturalistic outlook
Wright’s love and appreciation of nature began early in his life while working summers on his uncle’s farm. The rigorous routine, home-grown food, milking cows, putting up fences—all made a strong impression. In addition to the exhilaration of honest outdoor work, he was also learning to sense the deep mysteries of nature.
Wright often brought aspects of nature into his buildings with his use of natural light, plants, and water. At the Guggenheim Museum, it is thought that a nautilus shell inspired the spiral ramp and that the radial symmetry of a spider web informed the design of the rotunda skylight.

Process
I created planning sketches of ideas on how I would have cuts into the wooden canvas board. After I decided on the cuts that I wanted to have put into my board, I started sketching out designs that I could implement onto the piece. I choose the one I did because it was an area that I could work with as well as it was athletically pleasing by looking similar to roads.
Once I got the actual board cut by my art teacher, I was ready to start cutting out pieces of wood and foam to lay out onto the board. I wanted to apply the use of lines into the piece by shaving lives into the foam to give it more depth and attraction. I also wanted to be diverse from everyone else, so I focused on creating shapes that were organic and unexpected. I carried out the ideas and designs of Frank Lloyd Wright's naturalistic outlook and created scenery to match his aspects.
Reflection
I big issue that I realized once I put my board over a light source. The problem was the void space took a lot away for the entire piece. I tried putting object directly over the void, but then it too much away. I was able to resolve this my adding in the 'bridge' above the whole board. This directed the light across all of the objects and as well lifted the piece as a whole. All objects that I put on the board had its own way of being interesting, but looking at the piece was a whole, they all had a sense of harmony. The green foam pieces were not close together, and instead spread out everywhere. This kept the eyes moving all around and kept interest.
