Abstract Expressionism: Color Field Illustration
Gorky, Arshile: The Liver Is the Cock’s Comb
The Liver Is the Cock’s Comb, oil on canvas by Arshile Gorky, 1944; in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York. |
The impulse behind Color Field painting was reflective and cerebral, characterized by simple pictorial imagery designed to create emotional impact. Abstract Expressionism emphasize free, spontaneous, and personal emotional expression, and they exercise considerable freedom of technique and execution to attain this goal, with a particular emphasis laid on the exploitation of the variable physical character of paint to evoke expressive qualities.
It was a perfect combination to have the lion aspect and implement the color appreciation that I include throughout most of my pieces. I believed that it would be the perfect end-piece for my art in high school. It shows what I have become as a persona and an artist, and how I am able to express myself.

Planning
At first, I wanted to use water colors, but eventually settled on using colored pencil and a liquid blending tool. The blending tool would be used to make it image look less like it was in colored pencil and deepen the color of each area to solidify. None the less, from what I learned from water coloring tutorials and colored pencil blending I had learned another new technique I could create art with. I still had a little practice sketches just to prove to myself I would be able to accomplish it. The illustration of the tree was my first attempt. I quickly realized that I wouldn't be able to rely a tremendous amount on the liquid blender to blend the colored pencil for me, and it was more so for subtle blending between closer-gradient colors. The second illustration of the sphere is perfecting the use of the blender.

Process
Similar to creating the first lion piece, I created a rough sketch of a lion. From there, I used the variance on colors to show depth and shadowing in the lion's face. The colors were often showing the flow of the hair and mane of the lion. I did this by creating almost flame-like organic shapes. I used multiple gradients of colors to emphasize color field technique.
I needed to make sure I kept all of the colors the same solid color throughout the whole piece, this was done so that it would improve the craftsmanship and not look like it was done quickly. I then went over all of the colors with the blend just to make sure the colors were solid and clean. Between each color blending I would wipe off the blender so that I would get the color I used before on the next area of colors. It would have messes the whole piece up if that happened. |
Meaning and Reflection
Referring back to my process, this piece is my completion; It challenged me to use all that I have learned about art. I wanted this last piece to be the most special to me in a way as my sendoff. It represents who I have become as an artist in a sense of I now have complete control over what I make and how I portray myself and my work. I am proud and vibrant in what I have made and became. Each and every part of my had a meaning and I now see that in full color.
Connecting to the ACT
1) Based off of the inspiration I researched that influenced me to create my abstract artwork, my piece made me practice and experiment different techniques to use to make the piece in order to get a general concept of what I had to work with for my piece, colored pencil blending.
2) I took a very open-concept and open to different kinda of forms and colors when working on this project. I did this so that the piece wouldn't look as formal but instead something that I could take time and patience to create. I found that when implementing Abstract Art-style art with my piece, I could use my inspiration as a way to better represent the meaning and style.
3) I discovered the value that bstract patterns and color has on people's perceptions and they way people see the world. Its a art form that lets people express themselves in great detail, giving them (specifically me) the freedom to create anything I could imagine.
4) The conception of observation and 'putting to practice' was found to be very relevant for inspiration for me. The value of how my piece was presented was immensely important to reach to every aspect.
5) Concluding from my research, I discovered a deeper understanding of what my I used for my inspiration and was better able to produce a more meaningful and understandable art piece.
